Eligibility of UK vs Germany for International Students

UK

If you’re considering the UK for your undergraduate (UG) studies, it’s good to know that top universities used to require 13 years of pre-university education. Thankfully, this has changed, and now they accept CBSE plus two certificates. For postgraduate (PG) courses, you can apply once you’ve finished a three-year UG degree. If you’re looking into management courses, you’ll need to take the GMAT. For science courses, the GRE may not be necessary—always check with the university to be sure. Like in the US, some management programs might want you to have a few years of work experience. While universities might waive TOEFL or IELTS, you’ll still need them for your visa application.

Germany

In Germany, universities are often state-funded but set their own eligibility criteria. Always check the specific requirements on the university’s website. To pursue an undergraduate course, you need to have completed your 12th grade and one of the following:

  • Cleared JEE Advanced
  • Completed one year of a bachelor’s degree at a recognised university in India
  • Passed the Feststellungsprüfung, an entrance exam indicating you’ve effectively completed Studienkolleg

The competition is tough, and universities may ask for up to 90% in your secondary school exams, though having cleared JEE Advanced can lower this to 50%. For postgraduate programs, you’ll need a German equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in the relevant field. Additionally, high GMAT or GRE scores might be required. International students also need to provide IELTS or TOEFL scores and have a working knowledge of German. For programs taught in German, proficiency is key, and you’ll need to pass either TestDAF or DSH.

What is the Visa Process for the UK and Germany?

The visa process for the UK and Germany is as follows:

UK

A full-time student visa in the UK is known as a Tier 4 (General) student visa. Over recent years, stricter visa regulations have made obtaining a British student visa more challenging. Here are the key rules for this visa:

  • It is only granted for full-time study programs.
  • For diploma courses, the visa is valid for up to three years.
  • For university degree courses, the visa is valid for up to four years.
  • The application fee for this visa is £310, and an additional £310 is required for each dependent.
  • You might be called for a personal interview at the consulate, though this is not always necessary.
  • Whether you can work part-time during your studies depends on your individual case. International students can work part-time up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during vacations (only on-campus). They can also participate in full-time work placements if they are part of a ‘sandwich course’.

Germany

If you’re planning to study in Germany, here are the key points you need to know about getting a student visa:

  • For stays longer than 90 days, you’ll need a residence permit.
  • You’ll have to show proof of funds amounting to €8,640 per year to cover your living expenses.
  • The student residence permit is initially valid for up to two years. If your course takes longer, you’ll need to renew it.
  • As a student, you can work 180 days part-time or 90 days full-time each academic year. Germany is unique in allowing students to take part-time technical jobs in their field of study. Many universities also offer part-time on-campus jobs, known as HiWi (Hilfswissenschaftler) positions.

Post-Study Work Permit

UK

In the UK, the Tier 1 (Post-study work) visa was closed to new applicants in 2012. This means you won’t automatically get a work visa with your student visa. If you want to work in the UK after your studies, you’ll need to apply for a Tier 2 visa, designed for highly skilled workers. To be eligible, your job offer must have an annual salary of at least £20,500. With a Tier 2 visa, you can stay and work in the UK for up to 5 years.

Germany

In Germany, after finishing your studies, you need to apply for a Residence Permit to stay and find work. The immigration laws allow graduates to apply for an 18-month Residence Permit to look for a job related to their field of study. This permit is separate from your student visa and must be obtained from the foreign nationals’ registration office. If you secure a job offer relevant to your degree before you graduate, you can directly apply for a Residence Permit or an EU Blue Card.

Employment Opportunities

UK

Top job opportunities in the UK include roles such as corporate managers, directors, mechanical engineers, aircraft pilots, and nurses.

Germany

In Germany, the most sought-after jobs are in the health sector, mechanical and automotive industries, electrical and electronics industries, building and construction, as well as information technology and telecommunications.

Permanent Residency Opportunities

UK

Due to recent changes in government and legal policies, immigrating to the UK has become more challenging. The UK government has implemented measures to remove “bogus” colleges and limit non-EU migration. If you’re on a student or work visa, you’ll often be required to leave the country after your visa expires.

Germany

If you have lived in Germany for five years on a residence permit, you can apply for permanent residency. There are exceptions that might allow you to apply sooner. After eight years of residency, you become eligible for German citizenship. If you marry a German citizen, you can apply for citizenship immediately.
