Cost of Education in 2025: Canada Vs Germany

There’s a significant difference in tuition fees between Canada and Germany, especially for public universities.

Canada

Public universities generally have lower tuition fees compared to private ones. Expect a range of CAD $10,000 to $30,000 (₹6 lakhs – ₹19 lakhs) per year for undergraduate programs at public universities.

Private universities are generally more expensive, with fees ranging from CAD $20,000 and upwards (₹12 lakhs and upwards) per year.

Scholarships and financial aid options are available for international students in Canada, but they are generally less generous compared to domestic students. Researching individual universities and scholarship programs is recommended.

Germany

Public universities in Germany are a major perk for international students. Unlike most countries, there are minimal or no tuition fees for undergraduate and postgraduate programs at public universities.

However, students do pay a semester contribution that covers administrative costs, usually ranging from €150 to €350 (₹13,234 – ₹31,290).

There are exceptions, with some federal states charging higher fees for non-EU students in specific programs. Private universities in Germany can have tuition fees comparable to Canada, ranging from €11,000 to €20,000 (₹9,89,430 – ₹17,98,960) per year.

Scholarships are less common in Germany, but some universities offer merit-based scholarships for international students. There are also loan options available from German banks for international students, though these typically require a cosigner resident in Germany.

Part-time Work Opportunities

Canada

Indian students require a valid study permit and a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work part-time. On-campus jobs typically don’t require a separate work permit.

Typical jobs include On-campus libraries, cafeterias, administrative offices. Off-campus jobs include retail, restaurants, customer service, and data entry.

International students in Canada can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester and full-time during scheduled breaks (spring break, summer).

Germany

Indian students with a valid student visa automatically have permission to work 20 hours/week (up to 120 full days/year) without a separate work permit. Similar to Canada, students can work full-time during breaks.

Post-graduation Work Permits

Canada

Canada offers a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. The length of the PGWP depends on the duration of your study program (minimum 8 months, maximum 3 years). To be eligible, you need to graduate from a designated learning institution with a valid study permit and complete a full-time program of study (minimum of 8 months).

Canada’s PGWP can be a steppingstone to permanent residency through programs that give points for Canadian work experience.

Germany

Germany offers a residence permit for job search purposes after graduation. This permit is valid for 18 months and allows graduates to look for a job in their field of study in Germany.

The job seeker permit allows graduates to gain work experience that can improve their chances of qualifying for a work visa, which can eventually lead to permanent residency.

Canada Vs Germany: Which is Better for Indian Students?

There’s no single “better” option for all Indian students. The ideal choice depends on your priorities and circumstances.

Germany offers a clear advantage with minimal to no tuition fees at public universities. Canada’s higher tuition fees might be partially offset by scholarships, but competition can be higher.

Canada offers a wider range of courses initially and a strong emphasis on research. Germany has a more focused curriculum and excels in engineering, science, and technology. Consider your specific program interests and preferred learning style.

Consider your language skills and comfort level. Canada is primarily English-speaking, while Germany requires German language proficiency for most programs (exceptions exist for some Master’s programs).

Research specific universities and programs that align with your interests. Investigate scholarship opportunities in both countries. Consider the overall cultural experience and lifestyle you prefer.
